All These Kids

My dad's favorite line from "It's a wonderful life" was when Jimmy Stewart angrily exclaimed, "Why did we have to have all these kids?" As a kid I was mildly insulted by this and of course relished in the end scene when George Baily returns home and joyously hugs and kisses his kids. Now I am a grown up, a parent myself and I get it, totally get it! Sometimes I look around at these 3 screaming kids and this perpetually messy house and think, "What the hell was I thinking?"

Life with young children at home is insane. Kids suck the life out of us! They make messes and don't clean them up, they climb inside the dishwasher, empty cupboards, create unimaginable amounts of laundry and never stop demanding stuff from you!

Why did we have to have all these kids anyway? Because a smile from a Bun Bun, 3 years old, can make me think that all is right with the world. Because before I annoyingly removed Lala, 1 year old, from the dishwasher I snapped a picture and couldn't wait to show it to my husband. Because when I discover a loose tooth on Gus, 6 years old, it can fill my heart with so much emotion I cry tears of joy that my baby is growing up and tears of sadness that my baby is growing up, all at the same time.

At the end of the day sometimes it feels like when George Baily discovers that he really does have a wonderful life. There are no new studies about what I did wrong today, no other parents around to judge the impact of my bedtime routine. Just my family. My husband, my 3 kids and a little Goodnight Moon.
